The delightful summer house in Hotel Laurin’s park has been transformed into the design studio Designatelier L_100 in which graduates of Bolzano university’s faculty for design and art focus on the theme of hotel culture. Life in the hotel has been examined, analysed and discussed. Numerous novel and many-faceted ideas have come to life in the course of six workshops. By February 2011 the most interesting projects had been integrated into the everyday life and routine of the Parkhotel with great attention to detail and have enjoyed enormous popularity. The art installations enable each guest to experience the hotel and its ambience with enhanced awareness and to set off on an imaginary journey through its 100 years of history.
Kuno Prey, Roberto Gigliotti and Evelyn Senfter supervised the creative work of the young designers and supported them with advice and practical help. Experts were invited, including the sound artist from Bolzano Stefano Bernardi, the photographic artist Elisabeth Hölzl from Meran, the designer Volker Albus, the architect (and hotelier) Manuela Demattio from Bolzano, the artist from Berlin Alexander Schellow, and the Milanese designer Lorenzo Damiani.

Workshop: Anything interesting to hear in there?
Two traditional elements of a hotel form the basis of a sound installation: the warm creaking of the original oak flooring in the dining hall as well as the cool crunching underfoot on the gravel path in the hotel garden. By means of hidden loudspeakers the sounds are transmitted from inside to the outside and vice versa: the flooring can be heard on the asphalt in front of the hotel by means of the footsteps of passers-by, while at the same time the gravel path can be heard on the muffled-sounding carpets in the room corridors. By exchanging the sounds of the footsteps the hotel’s venerable character is highlighted in a charming manner and visitors are invited to experience its ambience with sharpened awareness.

Workshop: Traces in the hotel
Forgotten – What remains of the guest when he/she leaves their room? Every trace he/she leaves is meticulously removed, though forgotten items remain in the building for a considerable time. A shirt and two neckties, a pencil, a pink pair of glasses, a photo... The items left behind become a bridge between the guest and the room, a memento of the people who have experienced the hotel; traces from the room which have been kept until somebody remembers them. In this exhibition they are drawn together as a collection of signs, of biographical fragments from the lives of the many ‘careless’ guests. All objects are carefully packed and put on display in the hotel and visitors can look through them. In this way the history of the hotel and its guests becomes a tangible experience.

Workshop: Anything interesting to hear in there?
The sonorous backdrop of sound emanating from the restaurant kitchen forms the basis of a new rhythmic production. The work processes and kitchen implements involved in preparing dishes were recorded acoustically, processed in isolation and arranged to produce a new sound composition. This composition is part of the menu and is served to guests in the restaurant as a sound course and provides them with an impression of the noises produced while preparing dishes. Consequently the menu is extended by an acoustic glimpse behind the scenes. As a result guests are acquainted with the singular characteristics of the hotel in an unusual manner and discover the secret rhythms and charming atmosphere of the establishment.

The Hotel Laurin has been an institution in Bolzano/Bozen now for over 100 years. The traces of the intervening decades have been largely erased in the course of renovation work and only one relic of the past remains: the original walls.
The interior decorations and menus have changed reflecting the taste of the owner, though also the colours of the wallpaper and walls. These walls have heard a great deal and have plenty to recount in this project. Layer by layer the plaster has been removed to reveal important documents, secret ingredients and eighty-nine other stories.

Workshop: Traces in the hotel
An army of people are working to maintain and preserve the hotel’s magnificent facade. They are continuously engaged in removing all signs of damage and decay, after which they repaint or fill them. They are the cogs in the interior of a machine of which only a smooth surface is visible. They contrast in an interesting manner with the guests who only stay for a tiny part of the time spent here by the personnel. While they are here they leave traces which they do not expect to find again. Who is staying here? Who needs to save face here? Who has a countenance to lose? The faces behind the doors, the contrast between the various kinds of people staying here are presented in a series of photos and put on display in individual rooms.

Workshop: Who is staying at the hotel?
Life in the hotel has been captured over a considerable period by means of time exposure. Various parts of the hotel are shown in the pictures, the foyer, the bar, a room. Images of furnishings and objects which have not been moved are sharp. Objects which change place and people moving around the space appear as shadows or ‘ghosts’.

Workshop: Arrive – stay - depart
A suitcases, a bag, a rucksack are companions when you are travelling. They provide information on their owners, even without their contents being revealed. There are two narrators in this project: the individual piece of luggage and the traveller. The former is kept separate and photographed individually, while the owner is interviewed. In this way a series of narratives is produced which gives insight into the private life of the traveller without naming him or her nor to photograph them. The collected interviews form the basis for short stories which, together with the portrait pictures, are presented printed and framed.

A long time ago the arrival of guests in the hotel was announced publicly. Today this would be regarded as an intrusion into a person’s private sphere, but precisely this old custom has been revived in this project: the presence of the guest is spotlighted, without anybody except the guest him/herself noticing. Four selected places in the hotel are embellished with statements and in this way acquire a further level of meaning: mirrors opposite each other are positioned between the two sliding doors in the entrance and they reflect the lettering into infinity. ‘L’altro io’ (‘my other self’) is engraved in the glass of the mirror which shows many further ‘selves’. The bar becomes a stage, ‘on stage’ is carved in the parquet flooring and on entering the room the occasion becomes an important gig for the guest.
The wall in the corridor receives a ‘leises Eintauchen’ (‘quiet immersion’) and appeals to the passerby’s self confidence. The word ‘défiler’ (march) embroidered in the red carpet transforms the walker into a marcher.

Workshop: I’ve brought something for you
The Dolomite legend recounts how the dwarf King Laurin abducts a beautiful princess and hides her in his rose garden. He is finally discovered and taken prisoner and immediately puts a curse on his rose garden which feels has betrayed him: henceforth nobody will ever again gaze on its splendour, neither by day, nor by night. However, he forgets the sunrise and sunset. For this reason the Dolomites to the east of Bolzano/Bozen glow red like a flowering rose garden at sunset.
This story is illustrated in magnificent murals which have adorned the walls in the bar in Parkhotel Laurin since 1911. This project focuses on the relationship the traveller develops with the places he/she experiences during their stay. After his/her stay the guest takes home a fragment of the hotel as a souvenir which bears a relationship to the picturesque Dolomite massif (the ‘Rosengarten’) which forms the stunning backdrop to the town. The story’s protagonists become figures in a card game in which each card is a memento of the places visited.
